Criminal Law Firm in Singapore Led by Former Prosecutors

Kalidass Law Corporation is a criminal law firm in Singapore for people who are under police investigation, have been arrested, or have been charged in court. The firm is led by Kalidass Murugaiyan, who prosecuted cases for the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) from 2001 to 2012 before moving to defence work. As defence counsel, he draws on that experience of how the prosecution builds and runs a case.

Why Clients Choose Our Criminal Law Firm in Singapore

Anyone facing a criminal case wants to know three things: what happens next, what the realistic outcome is, and whether their lawyer has handled a case like theirs. Our team brings experience from both the prosecution and the defence to those questions.

We Know How the Prosecution Works

Kalidass Murugaiyan spent more than 10 years as a prosecutor at the AGC, handling serious drug offences and white-collar crimes such as money laundering, corruption and counterfeit currency. Paul Cheong served as a Deputy Public Prosecutor.

Experience With Regulatory Prosecutions

Many charges in Singapore are brought by government agencies rather than the police. Paul Cheong was a Principal Prosecuting Officer and Senior Assistant Director at MOM. We also act in prosecutions brought by the Housing and Development Board (HDB), the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

Pro Bono Advocacy and Public Service

In Public Prosecutor v Brendan Jeremiah Aw [2014] SGDC 384, Mr Kalidass represented the accused pro bono in a drug trafficking trial, after agreeing to take on the case at a very late stage of the trial. In 2009, while at the AGC, he received the National Day Commendation Medal (Pingat Kepujian) in recognition of his performance and conduct.

Teaching Criminal Law as Well as Practising It

Of Counsel Paul Cheong is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Law, Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), where he teaches Criminal Law and Trial Advocacy. He has co-written and written articles for the Singapore Law Gazette on the Criminal Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill (2021) and Singapore’s gambling laws (2022).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a criminal law firm in Singapore do?

A criminal law firm in Singapore advises and represents people who are investigated or charged for offences under the Penal Code and other Acts. Kalidass Law Corporation covers 25 offence areas on its practice list, from drug and sexual offences to prosecutions by MOM, HSA, HDB, NEA and LTA.

The work includes advising you during investigations, writing representations to the prosecution, defending you at trial, and presenting mitigation at sentencing. See the full list of criminal cases we defend in the table above.

When should I contact a criminal lawyer?

Contact a criminal lawyer as soon as the police or a government agency asks you to attend an interview, ideally before you give a statement. Kalidass Law Corporation offers a free first consultation on +65 6345 5001 and an after-hours line on +65 9191 0111 for urgent matters.

What you say in a recorded statement can be used as evidence later, so early advice matters. Our guide to fairness and evidence in investigations explains what to expect when you are called in.

Can I speak to a lawyer after being arrested in Singapore?

Yes, within a reasonable time after arrest. Article 9(3) of the Constitution of Singapore gives an arrested person the right to consult a lawyer, and the Court of Appeal reaffirmed in 2014 that this right arises within a reasonable time. An arrested person who is not released must be brought before a Magistrate within 48 hours.

The police may delay access to a lawyer while early investigations are under way. Family members can call our after-hours line on +65 9191 0111 to speak to Kalidass Law Corporation about engaging a lawyer.

How much does a criminal lawyer cost in Singapore?

Criminal lawyer fees in Singapore depend on the charge, the number of charges, whether the case goes to trial and the court that hears it. Kalidass Law Corporation offers a free first consultation, so you can discuss your case and its likely cost before you decide to engage a lawyer.

Our criminal lawyer fees guide explains what drives cost and the help available if you cannot afford a private lawyer, such as the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme and the Public Defender’s Office under the Ministry of Law.

Is the first consultation with Kalidass Law Corporation free?

Yes. The first consultation with Kalidass Law Corporation is free of charge. Call +65 6345 5001 to arrange a meeting at the firm’s office at 160 Robinson Road, #23-06 SBF Center, in Singapore’s Central Business District, a 3-minute walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT station.

Bring any documents you have, such as the charge sheet, police or agency letters and bail papers, plus a short timeline of events.

How do I find the best criminal lawyer in Singapore for my case?

Look for a criminal lawyer in Singapore with experience of your type of charge, a clear explanation of fees and strong client reviews. Kalidass Law Corporation is led by a lawyer who prosecuted at the AGC from 2001 to 2012.

Ask every firm you speak to who will handle your case, how often they deal with cases like yours, and how they charge. The checks in our “How to Choose the Right Criminal Lawyer in Singapore” section above give you a ready checklist.

Why does a former prosecutor make a difference in a defence case?

A former prosecutor has worked on the prosecution side and understands how evidence is assessed and how charges are decided. Kalidass Murugaiyan prosecuted for the AGC from 2001 to 2012, and Paul Cheong, another lawyer at Kalidass Law Corporation, also served as a prosecutor.

That experience helps when writing representations to reduce or withdraw a charge, and when preparing for trial.

Can a criminal charge be reduced or withdrawn in Singapore?

Yes. A defence lawyer can write representations to the prosecution asking for a charge to be reduced or withdrawn. In one case handled by Kalidass Law Corporation, a rape charge was reduced to aggravated outrage of modesty. The outcome of any case depends on its own facts.

Representations are written submissions that point to weaknesses in the evidence or to the accused person’s circumstances. Read more examples on our significant cases page.

Does Kalidass Law Corporation handle Ministry of Manpower prosecutions?

Yes. Kalidass Law Corporation acts in prosecutions brought by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). Of Counsel Paul Cheong previously served as a Principal Prosecuting Officer and Senior Assistant Director at MOM, and in a 2016 case MOM withdrew charges against a worker the firm represented pro bono.

The firm also acts in prosecutions brought by other agencies, including HSA, HDB, NEA and LTA. Our EFMA guide covers common offences under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act.

Where is Kalidass Law Corporation located?
